In the worst cases, I’ve run into areas that are impassable with wheels: snow and construction blocking sidewalks, shops that can only be accessed by a flight of stairs, and paths that are too narrow. ![]() I quickly resigned myself to the fact that shortcuts would rarely be possible. The first time I took Oliver for a walk in his stroller, I became immediately aware that many of my favorite places were not designed for us. The rest of this essay is dedicated to some of those observations as reflected in my day-to-day experiences exploring Edmonton with Oliver over the past three years. But I also think cutting my teeth in fatherhood during the pandemic, which brought with it the necessity to live hyper-locally, made me much more acutely aware of how I (and my boy) experience core principles of access, inclusion, and complete communities every day. It proved to be a great move for my professional growth, creativity, and confidence but my work consumed me to the point where I no longer saw myself as a partner to my wife and a dad to my boy, so something had to change (again). I took my first real plunge into the private sector, joining a large consulting firm - I was learning to be a dad so why not learn about the “other side” of planning while I was at it? Just as my lifestyle and routines were changing with an infant in the house, so too were my motivations and ambitions. I left the City of Edmonton six months after Oliver was born. My home - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - is the northernmost city and metropolitan area in North America with a population of over 1 million people. My career to that point exposed me to a variety of roles and projects that broadly fall into the categories of strategy, policy, long-range planning, land development, and urban design. Never in a hurry.Īt the time of his birth, I had been working as an urban planner almost seven-years, all at the City of Edmonton. Our boy, Oliver, was born the evening of December 25, 2020, forever changing my world, the way I view my place in it, and my experience of it.įor his part, he didn’t seem too fussed about joining us out here - maybe he could sense how effed up things were about to get during the pandemic? January 6 was just around the corner and up here in Canada, the Freedom Convoy was a little over a year away. Pushing all of those feelings aside knowing full well that my partner, Sarah, was feeling all of these things times a million AND had been experiencing the worst and most relentless pain of her life for the past 36 hours, having been induced into labor the day before.
